Over the last month, I had the chance to work on several assignments, but the one I’m truly proud of is an informal proposal for my business, Writing Mind. It might surprise you, given I’ve written countless proposals in the past, but this one was special. It pushed me to revisit my strategies as well as polish my techniques and the outcome was beyond rewarding. So much so that I’m even considering showing it to potential investors. This experience reminded me that no matter how skilled we think we are, there’s always room to learn as well as improve and surprise ourselves.
But what about the skills that I picked up this month? If there’s one that stands out, it’s got to be effective communication. As I gear up to launch my marketing company, I can’t stress enough the value of getting your message across clearly and convincingly. Alongside this, the art of delivering bad news gracefully is something I’ve realized is crucial in maintaining healthy client relationships.

However, learning is never a one-way street, and it often comes from unexpected places. For instance, a classmate less experienced in the industry helped me realize that using industry jargon like “machine writing,” could be more of a hindrance than a help. It made me understand that good writing isn’t about showcasing my knowledge, but making sure the reader understands the message. The lesson here? Always consider your audience’s perspective. Make your writing relatable and accessible to a broader audience.
By the way, “Machine writing” is when we use computer programs, also known as artificial intelligence (AI), to create written stuff. These AI programs use cool methods like natural language processing, machine learning, and deep learning to create text that makes sense and fits the context. They can write simple things like business reports or product descriptions, and even more complex stuff like articles or stories. But it’s important to remember, these AI programs don’t replace human writers. Instead, they’re like helpful tools that make the writing process quicker and easier. They handle the heavy lifting, while humans add the finishing touches to make the writing truly unique and creative.
The class significantly underscored the weighty role of maintaining professionalism in every written interaction. This isn’t simply about drafting emails to our clients or putting together updates for LinkedIn. It also includes how we choose to present ourselves in the wild, vast arena of social media. Now, as I stand on the threshold of launching my own marketing venture, I’m increasingly aware of this crucial detail. It’s essential that each message I send out—regardless of the platform—faithfully echoes my professional principles. Each word I pen, each idea I articulate, should serve as a reflection of the values I hold dear in my professional life. Looking back at the past month, I’d say my strength as a writer lies in my ability to simplify complex ideas, making them easy and interesting to read. This is something I’ve been working on since my career started in 1991, and the diverse writing styles I explored in the course have only added more arrows to my quiver. But this isn’t to say there’s no room for improvement. I’m keen on bringing a wider range of perspectives into my work, making it more relevant and appealing to a larger audience.
Becoming a seasoned professional writer is fundamentally an unending journey of acquiring new knowledge and refining one’s craft. This fascinating process means tuning your ears to your readers, valuing their viewpoint, and perpetually seeking out ways to elevate your work. For truly, the magic of effective communication doesn’t lie merely in the act of transmitting information. No, it lies in the ability to be comprehended, to generate understanding. Because when the day wraps up, the heart and soul of powerful communication isn’t confined to the simple act of speaking out; it’s about achieving the sublime art of being understood.
