President Jimmy Carter Enters Hospice Care: Reflections on a Life of Service

ByAngela Caito

Feb 18, 2023

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a beacon of morality, has been sent home on hospice. According to a statement issued by The Carter Center, the former president has decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. This news comes after a series of short hospital stays.

President Carter has long been known for his kindness and compassion towards the American people, as well as his commitment to justice, human rights, and world peace. As a child, I was fortunate enough to experience some of that kindness firsthand. I wrote a letter to President Carter in the third grade, telling him how much I admired him and thought he was a great president. To my surprise, he wrote back to me! That letter, which I still have, made him my favorite president at the age of 9.

President Carter’s achievements and contributions to the United States are numerous and significant. He served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, and during his presidency, he achieved a number of important accomplishments. He brokered the Camp David Accords, which led to a historic peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, and established the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Energy.

But President Carter’s impact extends far beyond his time in the White House. He has been a tireless advocate for human rights, fighting to end discrimination and promote equality both in the United States and around the world. He has also been a champion of global health and development, working through his foundation, The Carter Center, to eradicate diseases such as Guinea worm and promote sustainable agriculture.

President Carter’s commitment to service and his dedication to improving the lives of others are values that have inspired countless people around the world. Despite his many accomplishments, he has always remained humble and focused on the needs of others. As he enters hospice care, our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and we are grateful for all that he has done to make the world a better place.
