Physical Signs That You May Be Stressed Out

2020 was a stressful year for a lot of people. Now that many of the severe stressors of yesteryear are on their way out the door, you might think that things will return to normal for you as well. That might be the case, but then again, it might not. You may still find yourself experiencing stress, which can manifest in physical symptoms.

Lack of Appetite

While it’s more common for stress to cause an increase in appetite, sometimes being stressed out manifests itself in a lack of appetite instead. You may be so preoccupied with whatever is stressing you that you don’t feel inclined to eat. According to HealthDay, stress can also impact the digestive system, resulting in either diarrhea or constipation. If the constipation is bad enough, that could be a part of the reason for your lack of appetite as well. The impact of stress on your appetite can result in weight fluctuation, which, unfortunately, has the potential to increase your stress as well, creating a rather unpleasant positive feedback loop.

Trouble Sleeping

There are a lot of reasons why you might have trouble sleeping, and stress is a pretty common one. Mental stress can leave your mind anything but quiet, making it way more difficult to fall asleep. Your troubles may not be over once you manage to fall asleep either. It’s not uncommon for people who are stressed to grind their teeth in their sleep. For the sake of your sleep, mental health, and your smile, this is one physical sign of stress that you want to address sooner rather than later.


Do you tend to tense up when you get stressed? If so, you aren’t alone. A lot of people physically tense up when experiencing stress. Since tension is commonly carried in the neck and shoulders, that can lead to tension headaches. If you know you tend to do that, getting frequent headaches could be a physical indicator that you’re stressed. According to Conscious Movements, you should practice relaxing your muscles intentionally to reduce your risk of developing nasty tension headaches due to stress.

If you’re experiencing physical symptoms of stress, you owe it to yourself to take steps to address the problem. Try practicing stress management techniques. Make sure you’re taking good care of yourself physically too. Remember, some level of stress can be beneficial, but if you find yourself getting stressed out, you aren’t doing yourself or anyone else any favors by not addressing it.
