Allen and Son Barbecue- Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Allen and Son Barbecue in beautiful Chapel Hill is located just a few short miles off I-40 and thanks to the hard work and dedication to taste from owner/chef Keith Allen, this barbecue has long been a popular spot for people of all social and economic walks of life for many years. From ribs to chicken and the tenderest pork shoulders, all smoked with hickory chips, you just can’t beat the burst of flavor that you’re going to experience when you take a bite. Keith not only smokes everything right on site, but he uses a tasty blend of red pepper vinegar sauce as is popular in Eastern Carolina barbecue to coincide with the tender flavor of his Western North Carolina meats. This is a place where the food is outstanding, and the atmosphere makes you feel right at home. Don’t worry folks! No one will make you clean up or wash the dishes!
The Wood Box BBQ Restaurant- Jonesville, North Carolina
The motto at the Wood Box BBQ Restaurant is, “Where fresh is best, taste everything!” You won’t want to skip the Jonesville exit when bustling through North Carolina because once you visit this quaint little BBQ place, your taste buds will love you. Everything is homemade, and the staff is down to earth and friendly as can be. Whether you’re having a chopped pork plate complete with delicious made from scratch sweet potato casserole and some home battered hushpuppies or you prefer a bite of some tasty smoked chicken, you can’t go wrong with what you order. The ribs are so tender they fall right off the bones, and let’s not even get started about the amazing hickory sauce they make right in the kitchen. It’s a down home barbecue restaurant where the prices are low, and the quality of food is high. Simply put, this is southern barbecue perfected and you won’t want to miss out on trying it when you’re in the area.
Luella’s Barbecue- Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville is a popular spot for shopping, checking out the local music scene and catching great views of the majestic mountains. It’s also home to a wide array of barbecue restaurants and it seems that no matter which area of the city you’re in, you’re going to see at least one BBQ place to stop and eat. This makes it difficult to narrow down the best in the area, but we’ll give it a try.
Luella’s Barbecue has two locations with one on Merriman Avenue in North Asheville and on Town Square Blvd in South Asheville, and when asking the locals where they like to eat BBQ, an overwhelming number of people suggested people should try this local favorite. Not only is the BBQ out of this world, but they also have the most delicious pineapple upside down cake and the best banana pudding south of the Mason-Dixon line! This is an award-winning restaurant and they have won awards for the best wings in Asheville
Backyard BBQ Pit Durham, North Carolina
Heading north to Durham you’ll soon find the Backyard BBQ Pit and while this may look like a small, side of the road brick shack, don’t let simple, down home the looks fool you. This place is well-known for having some of the tastiest BBQ in the state and has even been featured on the Food Network show, Man vs Food because the food is outstanding. The prices are just right, and the meat is smoked right on site in the pit out back. According to an article published in The Tower review, the restaurant even serves celebrities as they have catered to legendary musicians including Dolly Parton, Jimmy Buffett, Garth Brooks and actors such as Robin Williams, Burt Reynolds and others. Thankfully, you don’t have to be a celebrity to sit down and have a meal at the Backyard BBQ Pit, but they sure will treat you like royalty when you stop in for a visit.
The Pedalin’ Pig BBQ Boone, North Carolina
Who wouldn’t want to stop in to try the food at a place called the Pedalin’ Pig BBQ? Just the name alone is enough to curate interest! This restaurant offers tender, fall of the bones ribs and flavor packed, hickory smoked and slow roasted barbecue for their guests. One of the most popular menu items is, believe it or not, a pork taco! It’s not often that you will see a taco on a BBQ menu, but these are the best taco’s you may ever have in your life. You can check out their Boone location at 2968 A Hwy 105 or even stop over in Banner Elk at 4235 Hwy 105. Following the trends of today and those of the health-conscious crowds, they even offer gluten-free and vegetarian meals all with the same high-quality taste as their delicious smoked meats. This is a great family atmosphere featuring homemade BBQ and excellent menu prices.
