How to Get Started with Your Side Hustle

Having a couple of projects on the side is a great way to increase the cash flow into your wallet. However, it may not be as easy as it seems when you are trying to get your feet on the ground. In order for your side hustle to take off successfully, there are a couple of steps you should take.

Set a Price Point

Chances are there is already a business that sells similar products to a similar audience as your side hustle. This means that in order for your business to survive in a competitive market, you need to stand out with your prices. The cost of your products should match the quality of their workmanship but should also be an incentive to buy your product over someone else’s. The key is that your prices should be high enough to make a profit but low enough that people will want to spend their money.  Many businesses decide to use a pricing guide in order to know where to start. After that you can look at the competitors’ prices to model your prices after theirs.

Get the Appropriate Licenses

Your small business cannot just be run out of your home without the proper licensing and certifications. The best way to know what you need for your business at home is by visiting with your local chamber of commerce. However, you might also need to be licensed by your state and sometimes on a national level. Additionally, the types of licensing your business needs also depends on what type of business you are running. For example, if you are starting a restaurant, you will need a license for food production and you might also get visits from the health department to make sure you are up to code.

Create a Digital Presence

In this day and age, your business cannot be successful if you are not online. You need to set up social media and a website in order to have the broadest reach possible because they have different purposes. Websites are great home bases for your business and can serve as the hub for any online sales you make. However, if you plan to sell things on your website, you need to make sure it is properly set up for ecommerce. This includes encrypting your site to keep your customers’ financial information safe from hackers and making sure your site can be easily navigated. Your social media can serve as a first impression for your future customers.

Plan for Marketing

To go along with your website and social media, your side hustle will greatly benefit from a well-thought-out marketing strategy. Marketing differs from advertising because it is focused on a specific audience and meeting their needs. You should start your plan by identifying your target audience. Whatever your strategy is will be more effective if it is tailored for a specific audience. From there, you can decide which social media platforms to focus on and what posts to make. When you come out with a new product or service, you need to use marketing to get the word out and help your business continue to experience success.

Make a Time Management Plan

Unless you want your side hustle to become your main business, you have to set up boundaries. Creating a time management plan helps you block out your schedule and use your time wisely. The last thing you want is to lose all your free time and not be able to spend time with your family. A plan also helps you not waste your time and know exactly what you need to accomplish every day. For example, you can reserve the weekend for fulfilling mailed orders so that you can send them off on Monday mornings. This is also helpful for any employees you may have, and you can keep everyone on the same page.  With a list of priorities, you will see what you need to cut out in your life and what you should make time for.

Find Investors

As a small business owner, you may be tempted to use all of your income from your main job for funds. However, this is very risky in the event that the business fails. For this reason, it is best for you to find investors who can help support your business as it expands. The best way to find investors is by starting with your friends and family, but you can also use social media to find people who are looking to invest in small businesses like yours. Networking is key if you want to find investors who can support your business long-term and build connections with other businesses.

Your side hustle business is supposed to be a fun way to earn money. If you put in the time to plan effectively, your side hustle can become successful and your customer base grows. All that is left for you to do is take the first step.
