Knoxville Actor Cylk Cozart Talks Wilderness Movie And More

While visiting the set during a recent shoot for Into the Wilderness, actor Cylk Cozart took a little time to sit down with Angela Caito to share his thoughts on the movie and much more, including what it was like to work with his daughter, actress Nikki Cozart for the first time.

In the movie, Cozart has been cast in the role of Mr. Magian, and while we don’t want to give anything away, we can say that Mr. Magian is a mysterious fellow and one who has a shining presence throughout the movie. Cylk Cozart, with his own special Hollywood glow, was perfect for the role.

For those who are not already aware, Cozart has worked in many television shows and 30 popular films including Conspiracy Theory starring Mel Gibson, White Men Can’t Jump with Woody Harrelson and The Last Movie Star which was acting legend Burt Reynolds last film.

Before he began his long career in acting, Cylk was involved in sports and played basketball and football throughout high school. Thanks to his sports endeavors, he was awarded scholarships and attended college at King College in Bristol, Tennessee and even had a brief stint playing basketball in the NBA Summer Pro League until a foot injury ended his sports career. At that point, Cozart worked his way into the modeling and acting industry and has seen great success throughout his career.

Cylk said there were a few reasons he wanted to do the Into the Wilderness movie once he heard about it.

“I’ve been trying to help bring movies to Knoxville and surrounding areas of East Tennessee for years and I mean, way before they even started making movies in Georgia, I was trying to get movies brought here and when I heard about this movie, it was A. There is a movie to be made here and B., the storyline was really, really fun and different.”

He went on to say,

“The storyline had something like a Wizard of Oz kind of feel but set in the wilderness of 1864 and I’m a history buff and when I had a chance to read the script, I saw that it was a really smart, really good script.”

Another reason Cozart decided to participate in the movie was that his daughter, Nikki Cozart, known for her role as Detective Delano on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, was cast in the role of  Walks on Wind in the movie. As many fans already know, Cylk and his daughter Nikki met in person for the very first-time last year after more than 30 years not knowing they were related.

“I was able to be on set her first day of filming and that was really cool because you know, I wasn’t there on her first day of other things in her life, so I figured I can start now!”

What better way to start with firsts than working on a new movie together?

Cozart discussed some of the other actors in the film including new to the screen, 11-year-old actor Christopher-Lawson Palmer who has been cast in the lead role of Jeremiah.

“I think the kid is going to surprise some people! Christopher is such a raw talent and kind of floats in and out like an angel throughout the film and he comes off precious in the movie. In person, he is very, very talented and can sing and dance and honestly, he’s like a young Michael Jackson in that he has talent and can do a lot of things and this film is a great way to introduce him because nobody knows who he is yet.”

He also talked about Shuler Hensley, who plays the lead role of Samuel Barnett, our war hardened confederate soldier. \

“Shuler is a strong actor from Broadway and he is just powerful and very methodical. I love working with people who actually think, and Shuler is a thinker.”

We’re having a really great time making this movie and I love working with Rick DeWitt, Michael Candela, Ev Stanton, Jeff Hartman, Vicky Edgemon and the rest of the film crew.

Cozart said that many actors have the drive to perform, but they lack the talent and others have the talent, yet lack the motivation needed. He said that when those two things, talent and motivation, come together, you have magic and that is exactly what you’re going to see in Into the Wilderness.
